8th Grade English and Language Arts (ELA)

Goals:

  1. To have kids feel comfortable tin school.
  2. To build confidence in ELA skills.
  3. To help student improve their reading and writing skill.

Activities/Structures:

The following is a list of strategies implemented by the 8th Grade ELA team:

  • Concrete rewards and incentives
  • Small group activities
  • Copious praise
  • Classroom store
  • Lots of scaffolding and review/practice

Mastery of Skills:

Mastery of ELA skills can be taken onto high school serving as a foundation for confidence in the ability to learn and success in applying the skills to new coursework.

Future Effects:

The goal of EMAPS is to provide opportunities for students who are overage and/or under-credited to re-enter the school system, get accustomed to being back in school, brush up on their academic skills, and get ready for success in high school.  By helping students be successful in the EMAPS program, we are securing the future of this and similar programs to give more chances and opportunities for kids to get back in school.

Students will learn how to think and how to support their thinking with evidence.
