7th Grade Math

Goals:

Our goals as math teachers are to prepare students for high school level math, to help students overcome the fear of math, and to cultivate critical thinking and develop thorough understanding math concepts.

Activities/Structures:

In math, we utilize a variety of activities and structures to deliver math concepts to students. For example, small groups of students are assigned to each teacher allowing each staff member to provide as much individualized attention as possible. This structure is useful for targeting student deficiencies. Additionally, we target student-specific deficiencies on Fridays through Kahn Academy and individualized lessons for each student.

Three students are playing a multiplication-based game called Spiral to practice multiplying integers.

Mastery of Skills:

Mathematics has many practical applications. Mastery of any number of mathematical concepts will be useful in business, personal finance, and higher education. We encourage our students to relate concepts to real-world scenarios at every opportunity.

Future Effects:

If we are successful in preparing our students for high levels of math, then EMAPS will greatly benefit from student success. Since math is a pivotal element in high school and college, our work as math teachers will determine whether students are confident enough to succeed as they transition into new academic settings.

Most Important Skill to Learn:

The most important skill students will learn in math is how to think critically. It is our goal not ingrain a set of procedures in the mind of students. We want to train students to analyze problems to determine what course of action they should take to derive the answer to a problem. Math is not a set of procedures to follow, it’s a way of using logic to develop correct conclusion. This way of thinking is applicable to many fields of study including science, engineering, computer science, and much more.
