On Saturday, February 9th, 2019, Mrs. Brown-Allen, Mrs. Larimore, and three students from EMAPS were invited to the Legislative Black Caucus Annual Youth Day Event in Annapolis. Senator Nathaniel Exum Youth day is a conference that is designed for middle and high schools students. The students were legislators for the day by participating in debate and voting on mock legislation. Students were given the opportunity to learn and share experiences with members of the Legislative Black Caucus. Students learned about the power of civic engagement and the legislative process. Students were given a tour of the State House Office Building and meet with Maryland Delegates. Students was able to make connections between school subject areas and the real world process of policymaking.

Students were excited to visit the State House of the Maryland General Assembly for the first time!



Students met with Delegate Sheree Sample-Hughes of district 37A (Dorchester and Wicomico Counties) of the Maryland General Assembly.

Students participated in setting up a room for a mock legislative session. In the photo above, students are placing legislation documents on the tables so that other students can review them prior to debating the content. The bill (HB 31) included information about weapons on school property.

Students met with Delegate Talmadge Branch of the district 45 (Baltimore City) of the Maryland General Assembly.

After the mock session, students were given a tour of the State House. The statue in the photo above is of George Washington holding his resignation letter he delivered in December 23, 1783.
